Summer's Coming
Are you ready to bare all?

Although the unseasonable cool temperatures here in New York City say otherwise, Memorial Day will be here in two weeks, kicking off the unofficial start of summer.

For weeks, I’ve been discussing the key must haves for spring, which by now, should have a home in your closet: Ikat tribal prints, military inspired looks, nude shades, chambray, and acid yellow to name a few.

Some of us have been in the gym all winter, while others have been hibernating on the couch. Either way, it’s time to put those bodies into something skin-baring swim wear.

How’s your swimwear and beach attire looking? If it’s lacking like mine, then it’s time to go shopping. Now!

Retailers have stocked their racks with all the latest swimwear styles, so now is the time to get the pickings while they’re fresh, if you know what I mean. Who likes a swimsuit that’s been picked and rummaged through, tried on over and over and over again?

Fab Chick Tip: If you’re going swimsuit shopping and need to try it on, please keep your under garments on! And most importantly, wash your purchases before actually wearing them!!

Okay, so let the Baywatch babe aspirations commence.

Here are a few online selections I deem fab chick approved:

L*Space $135, Red Carter $75, Victoria Secrets $68adidas by Stella McCartney $94

When shopping for swimwear, like anything else, always keep your actual body shape and needs in mind. Not your body image ambitions. Like all garments, swimwear should flatter and accentuate your body. You never want to overtly highlight your problem areas. And don't forget to embrace color. This is a great time to experiment with bright hues that you wouldn't normally include in your ready-to-wear looks.

If you're top heavy, you might want to stay away from triangle and bandeau tops. You should look for a top that offers you more coverage and support.

If you’re mid section is your problem area, you may want to wear a tankini. Tankini’s are a great cover up for the tummy while still giving you that bikini and two-piece feel. Let’s not forget the one-piece. The one-pieces today are far from your mom’s version. There are styles that are fashionable but still give your mid-section the cover-up you need to stay confident and comfortable on the beach.

If you’re bottom heavy, you might want to look at something with a full coverage bottom rather than a low rise or string bikini bottom. Unless you're auditioning to be the next video vixen, let’s remain tasteful and wear an appropriate bottom for your bootay. But if you’re pursuing a career in “video chick” modeling then hey, do your thing, no judgment here. *inserts side-eye*

Also when looking fab on the beach, cover-ups are a great way to add a little more pizzazz to your beach ensemble. It’s a great way to, well, cover up when you’re not in the water and maybe feeling a little self-conscious.

I say skip the typical oversize t-shirt you got out of your guy’s closet and go with something a little more chic. Like these for instance:

RYGY $75, Badgley Mischka $90.00, Marc by Marc Jacobs $186 Victoria Secret's $58

What’s an outfit without fab footwear? For trekking thru the hot sand, slip those perfectly manicured Chanel polished toes into some of these FC approved flip flops!

Juicy Couture $50, Dolce Vita $44, Boutique $72.50, Tibi $320

Also, don't forget the sunscreen, water, towel, iPod and a good book. I am personally recommending Platinum by Aliya S. King. It’s sure to be a page-tuner while you get your tan on. So head over to Amazon to pre-order you copy now.

But with all those small beach amenities, you'll need a cute beach bag. I say leave your clunky leather handbags at home, and grab your canvas, nylon, or even straw tote for a fab carry all. I personally carry a RL Polo canvas tote, but I love these as well.

Diane von Furstenberg $75, Marc by Marc Jacobs $158, Magid $63.00, Ralph Lauren $145

Despite the unseasonable temperatures we've been experiencing lately, I still say get beach ready now. I know I am. Even though Mother Nature is playing a few games with us, I’m sure she’ll send some strong rays our way soon. So let’s get ready to be fab in the sand.

Stay tuned to see my swimwear shopping adventures. This should be interesting.

And as always, keep it fab, chicks!
